Kalmar is one of the oldest cities in the country – once it was even the third largest city in Sweden. History is waiting around each corner - you will find traces of every different historical period – everything from the Stone Age to the period of great power. Take a walk down the cobbled streets in the Old Town and finish with a visit to Kalmar Castle, which has a history dating back 800 years.
Also the emigrant's area is not too far from Kalmar. From this part of Sweden many families emigrated to America in the years 1840-1930 to escape hunger and poverty.

The surroundings of Kalmar are famous for their glass art. The area is called the Glasriket, the kingdom of crystal. 11 glassworks are situated within 90 km from Kalmar city.
At the County Museum, you will find the largest treasure of gold coins in Sweden - see it along with all the other findings from the man-of-war Kronan. When the evening comes the fun is not over, it is just getting started!
