Malé-The capital of Maldives |
| |
| Visit to Malé |
Officially, Malé comprises Malé Island, the Hulhumalé and the satellite island of Villingili. It is Malé Island that you must visit.
Malé provides residence for about 85,000 people, roughly a quarter of the population of the entire country, on about two square kilometers of land.
As you approach Malé from the north, note the number of cargo vessels anchored in the outer harbour. The Maldives imports just about all its basic life requirements. The inner harbour is chock full of speedboats and traditional dhoni.
There is much to see on Malé. If you are interested in buildings, ask your guide for the Presidential Palace, the Islamic Center, old Friday Mosque and surrounding graveyard (a must for the history/architecture buff!)
If you are interested in what infrastructure keeps Malé going, visit the Male Southwest Harbour, the artificial breakwater on the southern and western shores, the STELCO power generating facility and the MWSC desalination and sewerage treatment facility. Prior arrangements need to be made to visit these sites.
If you want shopping, the Local Market, the Fish market and the Souvenir shops are a must. Ask your guide for other interests. |

| Resorts and Hotels |
A tourist resort in the Maldives is usually an island by itself, dedicated to the enjoyment of its own guest.
A typical resort has its own private beach. Each island has its own house reef which itself is a coral garden and natural aquarium. The shallow water enclosed by this reef is a large natural swimming pool.
Most of the resorts are carefully landscaped with the natural vegetation judiciously preserved. The building structures of each resort would occupy only 20% of land area. The resorts provide accomodatoin in beach and water villas. And most of them provide all modern conveniences.
This includes air-conditioning, hot and cold fresh water, private telephone, in-house cable television, good restaurants, well-stocked bars, souvenir shops and various sports facilities. Diving schools and related services are also provided in all resorts.
In short, a tourist resort offers everything one needs on a tropical island holiday!. Many resorts now have spa and wellness facilities.
