| About Kenya |
Welcome to Kenya and experience the way God intended nature to be: sun-baked savannahs, snow-capped mountains, glistening coral reefs, a myriad game, astounding habitats and outstanding people.
Kenya's landscape ranks among the most fascinating and diverse the world over. From the low-lying coastlands to the snow capped Mt. Kenya that rises to 17,058ft. above sea level. From the tree dotted plains to the jaggered escarpment that marks the sudden drop into the floor of the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley with it's alkaline lakes. And much more.
If a country boasts of diverse topography, climate and different cultures, this country is Kenya. Ever since the very first African safari, Kenya has been synonymous with the world’s greatest creatures
From our coastal shores at sea level, boasting of glorious beaches to the Great Rift Valley scattered with lakes and craters. The Kenya highlands once known as the “white highlands” to the snow capped peak of Mt. Kenya, not forgetting our very own desert in the North Eastern part of Kenya. It is an exciting country of dramatic contrasts. No number of days is entirely alike and you can never predict what new discovery awaits you around the hill.
With its 42 tribes, Kenya’s cultural experience takes one through a melting pot of cultures quite unrivalled in any other country. Paradoxically, this kaleidoscope of cultures has forged a nation with its own ideals, ambitions and own goals.
General information on Kenya The Republic of Kenya sits astride the equator covering a total land area of 582, 644 square kilometers [224,900 square miles], roughly the size of France. Within the country lies almost every landform from: glacial ice and snow to arid deserts, mountains to rich savannah, large lakes and dense forests. Kenya’s appeal lies in its unique combination of wildlife sanctuaries, glorious beaches, breathtaking scenery, agreeable climate and sophisticated accommodation, all wielded together by a happy and hospitable people.
Although Kenya is an enormous country, many places of interest to visitors are not more than an acceptable driving distance away and this has led to various “circuits’ being developed which avoid too much driving and allows the visitors to see a great deal of the country. These circuits are divided into:
- The southern circuit, covering Amboseli, and Tsavo area.
- The central and northeastern circuit covering the Aberdares, Mt. Kenya, Meru and Samburu
- The central and north western circuit, covering the Aberdares, Mt. Kenya, Samburu, Lake Baringo and Bogoria
- The Western circuit, covering Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Masai Mara, Kisumu and Kakamega
It is quite possible to combine all or some of these areas into a driving itinerary, depending on time and budget available.
At the coast, there is plenty of opportunity for excursions into the National Parks. Shimba Hills, Tsavo East and West and Amboseli are all close enough for safaris ranging from one-day trips to two nights.
Kenya is an ideal destination for tourists and has an excellent choice of accommodation, spectacular natural attractions and almost never fails to exceed visitor’s expectations.
NAIROBI Kenya’s capital sprang less than a hundred years ago around a railhead established by the builders of the Uganda railway. Although primarily the starting and finishing point of a safari there are a number of interesting excursions within the Nairobi city including: Nairobi national park, the Karen Blixen Museum, the National Museum; Giraffe Center, City Market and various excellent Golf courses.
The Nairobi national park lies 10 kms [6 miles from the city center and was established in 1946. It is 114 square kms of pristine savannah with large stock of migratory game. The park is open on its southeast border, which allows the corridor for the migration of game, which takes place with seasonal rains.
Of the "Big Five" only the elephants is absent. |
