Bangalore
Capital of Karnataka and India's sixth largest city, it is called the "Garden City" because of its numerous parks and avenues of gulmohur and cassia. Colloquially known as the Silicon City it is very famous for its vibrant night life, pubs, clubs and fast food joints. M.G. Road and the Brigade Road is a shopper's heaven. Situated 1000 metres above the sea level it is cool throughout the year. The must visit places at Bangalore are the splendid Botanical Gardens, the 16th century Bull Temple which has the fourth largest Nandi Bull in India, the State Secretariat Building Vidhana Soudha and ISKCON (International Society of Krishna Consciousness).
Mysore
Mysore is a charming old-fashioned and undaunting town of palatial buildings, beautiful gardens and tree-lined boulevards. Karnataka's second largest city, it is famous for sandalwood and the royal palaces. Located at a high altitude of 770 metres, it enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. The must visit places would be the Brindavan Gardens, Maharaja's Palace, Chamundi Hills and the Mysore Zoo. |
Ooty
Known as the Queen of Hill stations, it is located at an altitude of 2308 met Nestled in the Nilgiri Hills amidst the tea gardens, pine and eucalyptus tree it is famous for its eucalyptus oil and the mouth watering homem chocolates. The must visit places at Ooty would be the Botanical Gardens which houses a variety of plants, the small but picturesque Ooty Lake w boating facilities and the Dodabetta Peak (about 3000 metres) - the high peak in the Nilgiris.
Coorg
The hilly region of Coorg lies 100 kms west of Mysore. The countryside idyllic and the climate is delightfully and refreshingly cool. One of the m unspoiled regions, it is an absolute delight to the mountain walker. One hike from the rice-fields to the low land jungles up through the coif plantations. Sit back and enjoy the panoramic view of the coffee plantat and enjoy a cup of the fresh brewed coffee.
Kabini
A tributary of the river Kavery, it is located near the Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary which is spread over 55 acres of land. Movement over here restricted to elephant rides, open jeep safaris or on foot. Among the various activities one can indulge into are cycle rides, coracle rides, nature walks bird watching. Accessible throughout the year, the best time to visit between November to June.
Coonoor
Located 19 kms from Ooty, Coonoor is smaller and enjoys a milder climate compared to Ooty. However it is a pleasant place to relax and enjoy picturesque view of the terraced tea plantations. Places of visit would be Sims Park Botanical Gardens in Japanese style, Dolphins Nose and Lambs Rock.
Kodai Kanal
Quiet and a charming hill station, it has developed more into a romantic resort. Lying at an altitude of more than 2000 metres it offers a breath taking view of flower filled gardens and the Kodai Lake. Perched away from traffic and the noise, this is the place for strolls, bike and boat rides. Places worth a visit are the Coaker's Walk, the Pillars Rock and the Kodai Lake.
Chennai
The capital of Tamil Nadu, it is India's fourth largest city. It boasts of fine specimens of The British Architecture and plentiful music and dance performances. Inspired by the Dravidian civilization, though a commercial city it has not lost its simple charm and has therefore grown as popular tourist destination. Places worth a visit are the Kapaleshwar Temple, Fort St. George, the Government Museum and Dakshinchitra.
Mahabalipuram
Located 55 kms from Chennai, this former capital of the Pallava Kings was used as a workshop for their temple building schemes. One can see the earliest examples of Dravidian architecture in the seven'rathas' or the temple chariots and the seven pagoda temples (of which only one remains) that were built here. Pleasant throughout the year, it is most pleasant during the winters. One can take an excursion to Kanchipuram, one of the seven sacred cities of India to visit the KailashnathaTemple and shop for the famous Kanchipuram silks.
Trichy
Located 100 kms north of Madurai, it lies nestled between the Shevaroy and the Palani Hills and the banks of River Kavery. Briefly ruled by the Pandyas and the Pallavas, it is today a blend of history, pilgrimage and a thriving commercial city. Places worth a visit are the Rock Fort and the Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam.
Tanjore
Referred to as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, it has the distinction of having been the capital of the Cholas. The Cholas were great temple builders and Tanjore bears witness to this having no fewer than 74 temples, the most famous being the BrahadeeshwararTemple, now a world heritage monument. Other places worth avisitare. The Rajaraja Museum and An Gallery, the Royal Palace and An Village.
Pondicherry
A union territory of India, it has a strong French influence. It presents an unusual combination of European culture and Indian traditions. The must visit places are the Pondicherry Museum, Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the Pondicherry beaches. An added attraction is Auroville which is an oasis of peace and enlightenment. Pondicherry is a peaceful, fairly prosperous place with a happy atmosphere.
Madurai
Madurai, the sacred site and special abode of the Goddess Meenakshi, it is one of the most important centers of worship and commerce. Although surrounded by a sea of modern concrete cubes, the massive gopuras of this vast complex writhing with multi coloured mythological figures and crowned by golden finials remains the greatest man-made spectacle of the south. Pleasant throughout the year, the climate is most favourable in the winters. A must visit is the Meenakshi Temple and Tirumal Nayak Palace.
Rameshwaram
An island hallowed by Ramayana, it is said that a devotee visiting Varanasi has to visit Rameshwaram to get the full fruit of his prayers. Located 173 kms from Madurai, it is sacred to both the Shaivites and the Vaishnavites. Places to visit are the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the 12 jyotirlinga shrines in the country, Gandhamadana Parvatam which has a footprint belived to be of Lord Rama and the Perumal Temple. One can also indulge into coral sightseeing.
Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari, the lands end of India, is a meeting point of the three great seasthe Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. A spell binding scene which attracts tourists in large numbers is the unique sunrise and the sunset which is most spectacular at full moon, when sunset and moonrise takes place simultaneously. Places worth a visit are the Kanyakumari Temple dedicated to Parasakthi, the virgin goddess, the Swami Vivekananda Memorial which is on a rocky island 200 metres from the shoreline and the Gandhi Memorial where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes are kept for public viewing. |
